It makes sound on its own - but if you switch MIDI out on, it becomes a controller for anything: point it at a virtual MIDI bus and play an Ableton instrument with it.
Relative mode makes home row keys “move up/down \(n\) scale steps” from wherever you are rather than fixed notes.
